From the Principal’s Pen

SEPTEMBER 2019 – Greetings and welcome to Rockfish Elementary School where we always Expect the Best!  We experienced some of the typical glitches that go along with a first day back to school; however, they were quickly resolved, and we had a phenomenal beginning to our 2019-2020 school year.  Reflecting on my years in education, first as a parent, then parent volunteer, substitute teacher, teacher assistant, classroom teacher, assistant principal, and now your principal, I remember at each stage the anxieties of first-day jitters for parents, students, and staff alike; thus, I understand many of the apprehensions you may have felt on opening day.  As your principal, I sincerely appreciate all you did to make it such an awesome day.

Parents, please read the Parent-Student Handbook and go over it with your child.  It includes a calendar of special events as well as important information that explains school policies and regulations.  For those families who are new to the Rockfish community, you will discover that we have many wonderful activities available for parents and students.  When we have a school-wide event that is not noted in our handbook calendar, your child will bring home a note or flyer with specifics, and you will be notified by phone through ConnectEd.

We will appreciate your help with our RFES Fall Fundraiser.  The kickoff is September 26 with sales running through October 11.  Funds raised will help us provide needed student/staff supplies, ancillary materials, school beautification, and renewal of inoperative items.

Following Rockfish tradition, we began the year with high expectations.  Our high expectations extend to students, staff, and parents because it takes all of us working together to ensure academic success for all our children.

Every day is a great day at Rockfish Elementary School.

                 ~Mrs. Crawford, RFES Principal

From the Media Center

September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month. You can apply for you and your child at any public library branch or online at  There is no charge for the card; however, you will need to show a photo ID and proof of a Cumberland County address.  The card will allow your child to check out books and other materials, use the available computers, and give him/her access to numerous online databases such as Brainfuse that offers assistance with homework and test preparation.  Take your child to the library and check it out!

Another online resource available to all North Carolina students is NCWiseOwl at  If prompted, the password is wiseowl19.
